Shows your homepage when you open a new tab instead of the default blank page.
There are two variables that can be changed using about:config

newtabhomepage.switchtonewtab: default (true)
This will automatically switch to the new tab if true.

newtabhomepage.highlighturlbar: default (false)
This will highlight the url bar if set to true.
If it is set to false the webpage decides where the charat should start e.g google.com places the charat in the search textbox.

Addon has been tested using Firefox 3 – 7.0
I finally got around to finishing my iTunes Windows Service Installer which can be downloaded bellow.

JTunes Version 1.0

JTunes was created to make the job of installing and launching iTunes as a Windows Service as simple as possible. This means that iTunes will then start before anyone even logs onto the computer allowing you to play
your music as soon as your computer boots up. Once you launch JTunes you will see the main control panel from here you can install/uninstall start/stop the JTunes service.

Fields

iTunes Executable (.exe): JTunes will make a good effort to find the path to your iTunes exe file but if it cannot find it you can manually select it by clicking on the select button to the right of it.
Computer Name: This is your computer network name. if this is already filled in you don’t need to touch it.
Run iTunes as (Account): You should select your username here as JTunes needs to be logged in as you in order to access your music collection.
Account Password Type here your Windows login password again this is so JTunes service can log in as you to play your tracks (*).

Buttons

Install/Uninstall: This will install or uninstall the JTunes service not the program itself.
Start/Stop: For starting or stopping the service. One thing is when the service is running you will be unable to start iTunes as only one instance can be running at a time so if you need to access the UI you can stop the service from here and then start it again.
if you find any bugs or have any queries drop us an email at clearz@gmail.com
Edit: 27 July 2010. I have cleaned up the code and ironed out a few bugs so it should work on more platforms now.

Live Mesh Homepage

If your like me and you work on multiple computers then the idea of cloud computing makes a lot of sense. There are multiple solutions out there both free and commercial but one that caught my attention in Microsoft’s Live Mesh which is free to use and gives you 5GB of online storage. It requires you to install a small program on each of the computer you use and then you can create folders on your online desktop which will then be synced to the desktop of each computer you have mesh installed on. Any files you then place in these folders will get replicated to every other computer in your ‘Mesh’ as well as a copy stored on your online desktop so you can access your files from other computers that you have not installed the software on. You can even invite others to view or contribute to individual folders and you can choose which folders get shared between what devices and if a copy should be saved online. It is currently available on Windows operating systems and Mac OSX.

This works extremely well but I wanted to share my entire desktop between all my computers and not just certain folders on the desktop. This turned out to be rather easy to do at least on Vista, Windows 7 and Server 2008 which are my OS’s of choice.

To share your entire desktop you should first create one folder and only one on your live desktop webpage, this will become the root folder of your desktop. Call this folder something along the lines of ‘LiveDesktop’ . Once it appears on the desktops of your meshed computers move it to some other place on your hard disk, preferably in your home directory along side your Documents, Downloads and Desktop folders. There should also be a folder in your home directory called ‘Live Mesh Folders’. Enter into this folder and you should see your folder that you just moved from your desktop. Right click on it and choose ‘Change Sync Settings’ from the context menu. You need to point the location to the new location of your LiveDesktop folder. Once you have done this go back to your home directory. Right click on your Desktop folder and choose properties from the context menu. Once the properties dialog opens go-to the location tab and change the it to point to your LiveDesktop folder. It might ask you if you want to merge the folders. You can choose what-ever you want here. Repeat this process on all your computers. Your desktop should now be the same on all your meshed computers and any file you save there will get replicated throughout.

Update 28/11/09

Download the application from here
http://www.johncleary.net/2009/11/download-jtunes-here/

I recently got around to getting an iPhone 3GS which hasn’t left my hand since. Being a gadget freak I cannot help but be in awe at the amount of technology packed into this device. This is not my first iPhone either. I got a first generation one sent over from America about two years ago as they were unavailable here at the time. I had the thing for less than two months before it got robbed on me. I only have myself to blame anyway because I spent most of Saturday nights running around bars and night clubs showing the thing to anybody that would care to give me five minutes of their time.

Remote iPhone App

After playing around on the AppStore for a while I discovered a charming little free application named simply ‘Remote’. Once installed it lets you use your iPhone as a remote control for iTunes over your WiFi network. What’s more, you can also store multiple profiles on it which for someone like me who has access three PC’s and a laptop at home it’s a great feature. I could now take my music with me as I moved around the house controlling what music played from each computer all from my phone, but I had to be logged-on on each machine with iTunes running in order for this to work. This wouldn’t always be the case as there are other people who use the computers also or I simply may not be logged-on. It didn’t take long for me to start thinking how this setup could be improved on.

The one solution that came to mind was to somehow get iTunes to run as a Windows Service, so I started Visual Studio and Googled ‘C# Windows Service’. After a bit of reading I started on my App. I would need to develop a service that would run under my account and not the LocalSystem or LocalService accounts that a service will use by default. This was fine on my computer which is running Windows 7 Ultimate RC and other PC’s running Vista Ultimate as I can give my account the ‘Logon as Service’ privilege by simply opening the Local Security Policy editor, but the laptop runs Vista Home Premium which doesn’t have such easy access to the Local Security Policy. I finally found a simple little program on the net that allowed me to give the ‘Logon as Service’ privilege to users on non ‘Ultimate’ machines called NTRights.

I now can play music on any computer in my house with any user logged in or even if no one is logged-on and all this from my iPhone. The only problem is now when I try to start iTunes in the normal way it fails because it is running already as a background process so I have to stop and then restart the service while doing things like syncing my ipod. I am currently rewriting the app with a nice user (noob) friendly GUI instead of its current form being a bunch of console programs and batch scripts. I will release it here once it gets completed.
